Business overview
Most people in India have heard of the NSE even if they have never bought a single share. It is the country's biggest stock exchange and one of the larger market infrastructure outfits anywhere in the world, which is not a small thing. Set up in 1992. Trading actually started two years later in 1994 and that is the year that matters, because that is when the shouting stopped and the whole thing moved onto screens. Nobody really misses the old floor. The head office is in Mumbai and from there the exchange runs equities, derivatives, currencies, debt securities, ETFs and mutual funds, so basically the full spread. The NIFTY 50 is the part everyone knows, its the number the news reads out when they tell you how the market did today. But the real work is duller than that and mostly invisible. matching orders. clearing them. making sure the person on the other side of your trade can actually pay. NSE has thrown a lot of money at technology and risk systems over the years and thats really the only reason it can handle an investor base this size, we are talking millions of people here. One odd thing worth knowing. The exchange itself is not listed. So its own shares change hands in the unlisted market, which is probably how you ended up on this page in the first place.
